It is a cloudy but warm day in DC and we headed out to Mount Vernon to explore the home of George Washington.
Mount Vernon was home to George Washington for almost 45 years. The mansion and ground have been restored to reflect how it looked in 1799 the year of his death.
The white bedroom is the room where George died. The slave quarters reflect he living condition of the slaves who by standards of the time were well treated. On his death Washington released all of his slaves but they chose to continue living at Mount Vernon.
The house is made of wood but they used a technique of carving notches in the wood then throwing sand at the wet paint to make it appear to be stone.
The museum is exceptionally well done and is very interactive!! Yes, they have a whole room devoted to his dentures that were not made of wood!!!
After Mount Vernon we stop in Alexandra for a bit to experience the quaint town on the Potomac and for a bit of ice cream.
A fun day exploring the legacy of George Washington!!
