Guess what….it’s still raining. Salzburg has gotten almost 4” of rain in the last 24 hours, the good news it’s not snow!!! I was determined to explore Salzburg so I headed out on an early morning walk in the rain.
Salzburg is on the banks of the River Salzburg, at the northern boundary of the Alps. The mountains to Salzburg’s south contrast with the rolling plains to the north. It’s the 4th largest city in Austria. The close proximity to Germany resulted in its
occupation during WWII.
In the 1960s, The Sound of Music used locations in Salzburg as filming locations. We rewatched the movie prior to the trip and it was fun trying to envision the movie scenes while exploring the city.
The city is incredibly beautiful even in the rain. Mirabell Gardens with its rows of flowers marching in a French soldier formation along with the sculptures that enhance the gardens makes for a very peaceful place, even with all of the tourist umbrella’s.
I laughed when I encountered a vending machine that delivers hot pizza 24/7. I need one of those.
The glass box that is partially filled is a memorial to the people from Salzburg that have been euthanized. It was a sobering reminder of the suffering of the people during the war.
Walking through old town I encountered Mozart’s homes along with the bishops residence where he was held captive while proving that he could write music at the age of 12.
When we were at Mirabell Manson we encountered a wedding party in traditional dress!!
I did a morning walk by myself then came home to dry out since my shoes are not waterproof. I had to wring out my socks and use the blow dryer on my shoes, but it was so worth it.
In the afternoon I went on a guided tour and the group started out with 14 and only 4 of us made it to the end!!! I came home with my feet feeling like a block of ice..lol!! However it was so great to be able to explore this wonderful city!
The rain is suppose to stop in the early morning, so hopefully tomorrow will be a better day for exploring.
The gardens are beautiful! Hope the rain lets up soon!
