In the quiet of the morning I headed to central station to adventure out of Amsterdam!
About a hour outside of Amsterdam the landscape changes farmland with fields that will soon be filled with tulips.
Our first stop was Madurodam. A unique representation of the Netherlands created in a 1:25 scale. The models are exact replicas of special buildings and objects, including people and vehicles. Through intensive daily care, the greenery, especially small-leaved trees and bushes, are kept to a maximum of 60 centimetres high. It was amazing! To visit all of the Netherlands in just an hour without all the tourists!!
Our next stop was the peace palace at The Hague. The palace officially opened on 28 August 1913; it is home to the International Court of Justice that adjudicates general disputes between counties.
After the photo stop at The Hague we headed off to Delft. Famous for the blue ceramics that have been created there since 1653 it is a quaint town that has retained all of it charm.
We were treated to a private tour of the Delft museum and the factory where we observed the process of completing the artistic pieces. Many of the collectibles are hand painted by artist who get to sign their work.
Then we were off to the city centre where the blue heart represent their deep love of the Delft ceramics.
After exploring Delft we headed to Rotterdam, the third largest city in the Netherlands and the largest port in Europe. We headed out on a boat to view the port and the skyline. Because of the port Rotterdam was heavily bombed during WWII and had to be totally rebuilt. Unlike Amsterdam it is a modern city with lots of skyscrapers!!
After a long day of adventuring in the south of Holland it was time to head back to Amsterdam. It was a 12 hour adventure with over 10 miles of walking so this adventurer was exhausted!!! When I got back to the hotel I laid down for a 10 minute rest and woke up 4 hours later….lol!!
