Saturday morning I awoke to the sound of rain, which did not bode well for the day!! I really wanted to explore so I donned my rain jacket and headed out to explore the area around our hotel. We are staying at The Boathouse Waterfront Hotel that is in Dock Square (town center) and on the bank of Kennebunk River. The annex that we are staying in is a refurbished house from the 17th century. The stairs to the upper floors are really steep and narrow. Getting our luggage in was no fun.
Dock Square is a collection of colonial homes that have been converted to shops and restaurants. In the quiet of the morning (before 10am) it is beautiful and quaint. Then the crazy begins with all the tourists flooding the sidewalks and roads.
Historically a shipbuilding and fishing village, for well over a century the town has been a popular summer colony and seaside tourist destination. Kennebunkport has a reputation as a summer haven for the upper class and is one of the wealthiest communities in the state of Maine.
Just 1.3 miles from Dock Square is St. Ann’s Episcopal church. The Stone Chapel has been in continuous use as a summer chapel since it was consecrated on August 24, 1892.The large sea-washed stones were hoisted and dragged to the church site during the winter of 1886-1887, and work on the building began May 27, 1887.
Kennebunkport is the summer home of the Bush family since sometime in the early 1980s. The Bush compound is on Walkers Point.
The rain cleared by noon and the sun came out but then the wind picked up as Hurricane Lee headed our way. The wind created specular waves!!
We came across Granny’s Garden dedicated to former First Lady Barbara Bush for her service to the community of Kennebunkport, complete with a tribute to her passion for mismatched Ked sneakers and books, of course.
We explored until we were both exhausted since the Hurricane is suppose to hit tonight and we could stuck inside tomorrow and without power!!!
