Another early morning pickup and I am headed to the Fiordland National park for a cruise on the Milford Sound. It is going to be a challenging day because it is pouring rain but I am geared up with waterproof shoes, rain jacket and quick dry pants so I am ready for this adventure!!!
After driving three house in the unrelenting rain we enter the Fiordland National Park it is in the southwest of New Zealand’s South Island. It’s known for the glacier-carved fiords of Doubtful and Milford sounds. A beech forest trail on the sandy Milford shore offers views of towering Mitre Peak. Nearby, the craggy Earl Mountains are reflected in the glassy surface of Mirror Lakes. On the Cleddau River, the Chasm Walk passes over bridges with views of powerful waterfalls. Fiordland has achieved World Heritage status.
Our driver explained to us that even though the rain made it difficult it was actually one of the best days to be in the part because of the waterfalls that were everywhere and do not appear except when it rains. It quickly became apparent that he was right and the cliffs where alive with waterfalls. We made several stops in the park to view the cliffs and mirror lake but every time we stepped out of the coach the rain started pouring so it was hard to take in the beauty that surrounded us.
As we approached Milford Sound the rain started to ease and I was hopeful that the cruise would happen. I was not disappointed we were able to head out to explore the sound.
Milford Sound, New Zealand’s most stunning natural attraction is deep within Fiordland National Park . With its l combination of mountain peaks, ink-dark waters and superb dramatic forest-clad cliffs, it is truly magical. The rain finally stopped and I was on the top deck as we approached one of the largest waterfalls and the spray from it soaked all of us but it was incredible to be so close to the powerful waterfall.
As we exited the park for our long drive back to Queenstown the sun came out and the waterfalls disappears as quickly as they had appeared!!
A magical day in a very special place!!
Mary, I am enjoying your travels in New Zealand 🙂 I took a break from working on a photo book of last year’s world cruise. I have soooo many photos to go through which is overwhelming but bringing back wonderful memories. I thought to myself, “Where in the world is Mary?” and found out! You are an amazing Adventurer. The world is your oyster. Heartfelt thanks for sharing and I know you will continue enjoying the magic of every moment wherever you are. Lorraine
