In the early morning we headed to the airport to catch a flight to El Calafate, Patagonia.
Buenos Arias airport is an absolute mad house!!! When they say that you need to arrive at least 4 hours ahead of your flight they are not kidding. we stood in line for almost 2 hours just to check our bags. Then we had to walk 1/2 mile though the terminal to get to the security checkpoint. The line at security was more than an hour. Note to self don’t drink so much water in the morning before going to the Buenos Aries airport!!!
El Calafate is a boomtown near Argentina’s border with Chile. For 65 million years, the land here has been raised by chaotic volcanic eruptions and carved by massive glaciers, creating a series of jagged islands, interconnected fjords and channels, and mountainside glacial lakes. The area is named for the indigenous calafate bush—locals say eating its berries will ensure your return to this mystical region.
As we drove from the airport the incredible Lake Argentino with its crystal blue water surrounded by the Andes mountains was in full view. We arrive in the late afternoon with just enough time to stroll the quaint little town! I loved the bridge over the river that had the love locks! The weather has really changed from Easter Island where it was in the 80’ to El Calafate where the temps are in the 40’s and the strong winds will knock you down.
That evening made our way into a smaller neighborhood that’s off the beaten track to enjoy dinner at a local chef’s home. He has written his first cookbook that contains stories of his family along with pictures of the rescue dogs that he loves!! Another evening filled with great conversation and incredible food. The best vegetarian food I have had in 3 years!!! I really enjoy the opportunity to interact with locals!!!
A long day of travel but we are finally in the Patagonia region! I am looking so forward to exploring this beautiful region.
