This morning, we bid farewell to our captain and crew as our cruise ends in Ushuaia, the “City at the End of the World.” Ushuaia is a former penal colony whose name is a Yamana word for “bay that stretches into the sunset. “Today, it’s a small but busy port with a frontier atmosphere. The snowcapped Andes rise on one side of town, while the Beagle Channel extends from the other.
We did a city tour that included going to a viewpoint to see the city. It has really grown since I was here in 2016!
We headed to local home for a home-cooked lunch with Ushuaian family. is widely considered to be the world’s southernmost city, and people who live here tend to originate from all over Argentina. As we dined on lentil stew and spinach fritters a selection of home-made desserts, we had a chance to chat with our hosts about what it’s like living at the “End of the World.”
We had a bit of free time we we headed down to the pier for a picture with the sign for the end of the world then did a bit of shopping while searching for fun street art.
Next we meet a local Argentine war veteran. Together we discussed theControversial Topic of the Malvinas/Falkland War—specifically how Argentine soldiers were treated during and afterward. Very similar to how our Vietnam vets were treated.
After dinner we headed back to the hotel as most of us are hitting a wall with our energy level. Tomorrow we head back to Buenos Aris!
