The day started with the good news that it had finally stopped raining!! We took a walk about Salzburg to enjoy the lack of rain and then we boarded a coach to go to Hallstatt for the morning.
Hallstatt is a village on Lake Hallstatt’s western shore in Austria’s mountainous Salzkammergut region. Its 16th-century Alpine houses and alleyways are home to cafes and shops. Hallstatt, considered one of the most beautiful lakeside villages in the world. It also has the famous Bone House with over 600 skulls and bones,
We had a lot of fun exploring the small town including observing the houses that were flooded due to the rain. I really wanted to go out in the swan paddle boats but sadly they were closed. Shortly before we were due to get back on the coach the rain returned. Our drive back to Salzburg was a bit difficult due to the rain but we made it back just in time to board the second tour bus for the Sound of Music tour.
We headed off to discover filming locations around the city and beyond that were used in the filming of the Sound of Music.
Our first stop was at Schlass Leopoldskant lake where the Von Trapp mansion sits of the lake. This is the lake where the scene of Maria and the children falling into the lake took place.
Next we went to view the gazebo where the famous scene between the oldest daughter Liesl and Karl took place with the song “I am Sixteen going on Seventeen”gazebo is. The gazebo is tiny and was really only used for outdoor shooting, the real scene was shot in Hollywood….drat for destroying my vision!!!
The tree lined street is where Maria walked to the Von Trapp mansion from the bus stop and the children were in the trees.
The music festival, at which the Von Trapp family performed their disappearing act, is at the Rock Riding School’ a 1400-seat theatre built in what was a rock quarry.
The Abby that Maria was at prior to going to live with the Von Trapp family has a red dome on top of the clock tower.
Mondsee, is the picturesque town where the famous Basilica St. Michael is, and was the site where the wedding of Maria and Baron Von Trapp was filmed.
Mirabell gardens (I posted some pictures yesterday) was the filming location for the “Do-Re-Mi” scene.
This tour was so much fun even in the rain. Our tour guide was going up and down the isles getting us to sing along to all the famous songs from the Sound of Music.
On the trip back we had lots of snow. Gotta love Austria in the fall!!!
Tomorrow we leave for Vienna and the last three days of this epic adventure.
