After watching a spectacular sunrise over the Loch Ness I went on a walk about in search of Nessie the Loch Ness monster. The shores of the loch are in full bloom on this beautiful morning. Our hotel is nestled in the mountain above. I rounded a corner and what did I see but Nessie….she is a gentle giant and very tame.
Soon we were off to the train station to go to Kyle but first a quick stop in the Royal Highland Hotel to view their staircase which was the inspiration for the staircase on the Titanic. It was spectacular!!!!
bWe boarded the train on our way to Kyle of Lochalsh. Skirting alongside lochs and through wild mountain landscapes, with cascading waterfalls, mesmerizing nature, and towering peaks that rolled by the windows we were treated to amazing views of the Highlands.
We quickly boarded our coach to head over the bridge to the Isle of Skye. The bridge to the Isle has a very high arch to allow ships to pass through and connects the isle with the mainland. But the most important feature of the Isle is my new bar Saucy Mary!!!!
Back in the coach we headed off to Eilean Donan Castle, one of the most striking castles in Scotland. Perched atop a tiny island at the confluence of Loch Duich, Loch Long and Loch Alsh, this iconic fortress has played a role in several films. Eilean Donan Castle is one of the most recognized castles in Scotland, and probably appears on more shortbread tins and calendars than any other. Strategically located on its own little island, overlooking the Isle of Skye, at the point where three great sea-lochs meet, and surrounded by the majestic splendour of the forested mountains of Kintail, EileanDonan’s setting is truly breath-taking.
After exploring the castle’s history and amazing views, we continued by coach to Fort Augustus where we enjoy an entertaining ‘Clansman Show’. Andrew dressed in the Feilidh Mhor, explained how the ‘days of old’ Highland families ate, lived and survived. We learn the clan system and local culture as interactive demonstrations showcased traditional Highland dress and ancient weapons.
After a long day of adventuring we headed back to the hotel for an incredible dinner that included dark chocolate vegan cheesecake!!! Have I mentioned that I love Scotland?
What a fun time
