I headed to the National Air and Space Museum only to find out that I had to have a ticket and there was none available for 3 days…..drat. But this is Washington and there are many other options so I headed over to the National Art Gallery and Sculpture Gardens. It was a perfect choice for a beautiful morning in DC. I was alone in the gardens away from the chaos of all of the kids in DC for their 8th grade trip.
In the afternoon we went to the National Archives to see the founding documents for the US. Seeing the documents and reading about the struggles to become a nation was powerful. Our founders were really brave and wanted us to be the best. But then there is the undercurrent of limiting rights to only white men. The struggle for all to be included and have the same rights is a constant challenge that continue today.
It has been a hectic 5 days trying to experience the history of the US. It has been overwhelming at times to try to absorb and process where we have been as a county and where we are now. I was searching for a bit of hope that we can overcome the divisiveness that defines us now and become a county that respects each even when we disagree. As a county we have done that in the past although at great cost of lives and much of the bitterness still exits. Did I find hope in exploring the past that we might survive the current struggles??? Sadly I did not!!!
I am headed home tomorrow for 6 days before I head out on my next adventure!! Hope you enjoyed Washington DC!
Where are you going on your next adventure. I think she may be jealous. She has a wife for whom your travel schedule would be hell on earth. (As a homebody married to someone who would travel as much as you do, even the amount of travel we do makes me twitchy.) Home for six days. Wow. That’s quick laundry turn-around!
