Our train into Quebec was a bit late so it was almost 8:00am when we arrived at our hotel for a quick turn around as we headed out for a day of exploring!!
Quebec City, founded in 1608, is a historic, predominantly French-speaking city on the St. Lawrence River in Canada. Known for its European charm, it features the iconic Château Frontenac hotel and is North America’s only remaining walled city north of Mexico. We did a bit of a city tour then got off the coach to explore the lower town. The quaint shops and cobblestone streets are reminiscent of the little towns in France.
Next we headed to the Joan Of Arc gardens that had incredible displays of flowers. The gardener informed us that they plant 1200 annuals and replace over 300 perennials annually. It was a perfect day for a stroll in the gardens!!!
Nearby was the Citadelle the Plains of Abraham, the site of the famous Battle of the Plains, when the British army defeated the French in a pivotal battle of the Seven Years’ War. The French never regained control of the territory, essentially making this moment the birth of Canada.
Today, the Plains of Abraham is a National Historical Park, featuring a number of interactive exhibits, as well as noteworthy monuments, commemorative plaques, canons, and more. Best part was the views of Quebec from inside and the noon cannon shot!!
Then we headed to an authentic 1920s sugar shack where maple syrup is produced. Amid a maple forest, we learned the history of the syrup during an informative short tour followed by a tasting of this iconic Canadian staple. Afterward, we sat down for a three-course lunch of traditional food inspired by the syrup. Who knew that plain bread with maple syrup was so good???? For desert we poured maple syrup in snow to create lollipops…YUM!!!
We are staying at The Fairmont Le Château Frontenac is one of Quebec City’s most recognizable landmarks. It is also one of the most beautiful sights when visiting Quebec City. The Château Frontenac is known as the most photographed hotel in the world! The Château is visible from many parts of the city, but there are several spots that offer the best views of it. Some of the best places to photograph it include the Dufferin Terrace , Pierre-Dugua-De Mons Terrace, and from Rue du Marche Champlain in Lower Town.
Inside the Fairmont Chateau Frontenac is the famous 1608 Bar. The 1608 bar is where time stands still with a breathtaking view of the St. Lawrence River. Of course we had an adult beverage and enjoyed the sunset!!!
