The rain has stopped but Halifax is fogged in!!! I ventured out on a walkabout because I had a few last things I wanted to see.
First I headed down to hill to the harbor to see the water one more time. Then back up the hill (questioning why I had gone down because seriously it is a mile straight up!!!) to the Citadel. The Halifax Citadel is a star-shaped, Victorian-era British fortification perched high on Citadel Hill overlooking downtown Halifax, Nova Scotia. Built between 1828 and 1856 (the fourth fort on the site), it was designed to protect the strategic harbor and naval yard, though it was never attacked.
From there I headed to the Public Gardens. The Halifax Public Gardens is one of downtown Halifax’s beautiful treasures – a 16-acre Victorian city garden, with a rich variety of plants and trees, a beautiful cast iron bandstand. It was so peaceful and a perfect way to relax and enjoy Halifax before heading out for the first of 4 train trips that will take us across Canada.
The Ocean Train for a trip though Moncton before crossing the Miramichi River amidst dense spruce forests. During the night, we continued to Chaleur Bay and crossed into New Brunswick before making our way along the widening mouth of the St. Lawrence River under the cover of night. Early tomorrow morning we will arrive in Quebec.
