I arrived in Armação de Pêra, Portugal to visit my friend Martha. She has an incredible condo near the water in this small Portuguese fishing village. The town is one of the last places in the region where fishing boats are launched from and recovered to the actual beach. There is no harbor.
We set off on a walkabout on the boardwalk that meanders though a nature reserve that runs parallel to the ocean. This 3 mile trail is filled with wild flowers and birds. Along the way stopped at a small cafe for pastries and to people watch!!
Later in the afternoon we explored the small town with the white buildings with red roofs. It is everything I had envisioned with it’s winding streets, white buildings with red roofs and small mission style churches that are simple but beautiful.
What was unexpected was the street art and the metal sculptures of women that are in unexpected places throughout the town. Interesting that there is a sculpture of a nude woman outside the small church.
We sat outside an had a delicious dinner and grabbed a gelato for the walk home. In the summer the town will fill with 100,000 tourist but right now it is mostly locals and are super friendly. What a fun day exploring this city.
