The weather has gotten a lot better and I am hoping for a sunny day to enjoy our adventure. We are headed to the ferry to go to Tallinn, Estonia.
The ferry was way bigger than I imagined holding 2500 passenger plus 3 decks of cars and trucks. Getting on the ferry was challenging as 2500 people all pushed and shoved to gab a seat. We found a great spot in one of the pubs with a fantastic view or at least we thought so!!!
As we crossed the Gulf of Finland there was entertainment…lol. First it was bingo (I don’t think the Bingo song will ever leave my brain) we got up and walked the decks when the guitar player started.
As we pulled into dock the beauty of the medieval times Old Town came into view looking very much like my vision of Russia.
We met our tour guide and headed off to Old Town Our guide was very entreating and gave us great information about the people of Estonia including how they are all introverts. Maybe I have found my people!!!
Old Town, is an area which has maintained its medieval character and charm from the cobblestone streets, the walk ivy-covered Viru Gate and the gothic Town Hall you really feel like you have stepped back in time! The Russian influences are apparent in the architecture of Aleksander Nevski Cathedral and Kadriog Park.
On Toompea Hill we were treated to a view of the perfectly pink Toompea Castle, built in the 13th century, now home to Estonia’s parliament. Directly across from the castle is Aleksander Nevski Cathedral. This striking Russian Orthodox-style cathedral with onion bulb domes. I loved the street musicians who were playing though out the city on antique instruments.
We had a bit of free time so we headed to one of the outdoor cafes and had a drink and cheese to celebrate Kim’s birthday!! Then we went in search of the chocolate shop that our guide told us about. We walked every street and even did several google searches for it but were unsuccessful.
Too soon it was time to head back to the ferry for our 2 hour trip home. We chose a location on the top deck and enjoyed the beautiful weather!
Back at the hotel I was able to see the sunset from my room!! A long day but so worth it!!!! Estonia will be the closest I get to Russia and I am happy that I got to experience it.
Yes, another “ Best day ever….so far”!!!
