We are going to Murano and Burano today!

On our way to Murano we passed by the “Building Bridges” Sculpture!! I had read about it and was really happy to see it, an unexpected treat.

Murano is a series of islands linked by bridges in the Venetian Lagoon about one mile from Venice. The island of Murano is renowned for its long tradition of glass-making. Murano’s reputation as a center for glassmaking was born when the Venetian Republic, fearing fire and the destruction of the city’s mostly wooden buildings, ordered glassmakers to move their furnaces to Murano in 1291.

We visited a glass factory where we got to see glass being blown and shaped. It is an incredible process!! I am more determined than before to try this art form!! We were not allowed to take pictures in the gallery of glass but trust me it was amazing. The glass horse that was in the garden was amazing!!

Next we went to Burano. It is an island near Murano that is known for its lace work and brightly coloured homes. We got to see the lace being created by a lady that is one of a few lace makers left. The work is tedious and there are no young people willing to learn.

The bright colored homes make Burano a fun place to get lost in. We had so much fun wandering around.

We got back to St. Mark’s Square in the late afternoon and decided we needed to have an adult beverage and a snack. It’s my birthday so I got to pick the snack so as bit of a joke I ordered a pizza with franks. My two favorite foods!!! Sounds awful but it was really good.

I was staring at the lion statue while we were snacking and determined that I could pose like the lion. OK adult beverages were involved!!! I was excited that I could get up after posing.

We ended the day watching the sunset from the terrace of our flat and sharing funny stories of our adventures. Kim and Ernie are the best travel mates ever!!!

This will be my last post for awhile as I leave early tomorrow morning for home. This trip has been everything and more than hope for, 11 countries plus the Arctic Circle…oh my!!!! I spent more than a year planning this trip that I believed would be my last adventure. When I started having health issues a part of me feared that I would never adventure again but this trip proved to me that i can so I will travel on!!! Time to start planning my next adventure!!!!

Thanks for coming along on this incredible adventure!!!
