For our adventure today we went to Bratislava,Slovakia. Just an hour and a half by bus from Vienna is this charming 18th century town. Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, is set along the Danube River by the border with Austria and Hungary. ] It was the coronation site and legislative center and capital of the Kingdom of Hungary from 1536 to 1783; eleven Hungarian Kings and eight queens were crowned in St. Martin’s Cathedral.

For all of its history the first thing you see is the UFO tower that is part of the UFO bridge. It definitely brings a bit of modern into a historic town.

St Martin’s Cathedral was the place where Hungarian Kings were crowned from 16th to 18th centuries.  On their way to their coronation the monarch’s followed a set route, that route is marked with gold crown medallions lodged into the cobble stones.

Čumic the adorable guy peaking out from the sewer is a big tourist attraction but has no historical value. It was simple put there to attract tourists and it does…..lol!!!!

We went into the oldest pharmacy in the county that began in the 15th century and has retained many of the same features while still serving the community.

The oldest store in the city has a small museum that features cash registers dating back to the 15th century along with beer brewing vats and most important a ice cream maker that can make 4 kinds of ice cream at once. I guess our obsession with ice cream is not new!!

At the end of our walking tour we were treated to three different cakes to taste.

Fortified by our cake we began the hike up to the Bratislava Castle it was a steep climb of over 200 feet in the rain but the views were worth it!!! The castle was very safe as any invader would die of exhaustion before reaching the top…lol!!!

We made a stop to enjoy the local brew and pastries and then we headed back to Vienna.

Another great day adventuring!!!

Tomorrow we travel to our last city Venice!!
