The day began with a 3 mile walk on the beach where I enjoyed the sunrise and spent time capturing the early morning on the beach!!!

Our first adventure of the day was to Canaveral National Seashore. We took Ernie’s Mustang for the adventure with the top down enjoying the wind in our hair. The park, located on a barrier island, was created on January 3, 1975, by an act of Congress. The park is split between Brevard and Volusia counties, with 9 miles of the seashore in Brevard County, and 15 miles of the seashore in Volusia County. CANA consists of 24 miles of beaches, dunes, mangrove wetlands, and a large portion of the Mosquito Lagoon. We explored Turtle Mound the highest point and Mosquito Lagoon that lives up to its name. My bug bites have bug bites!!!! The park also has a nude beach which we did not stop at but I am sure those folks were having a good time with sand, mosquitos and sunburn.

Our next stop was Marine Discovery Center, where Kim and Ernie volunteer. The center focuses on education of kids to become stewards of the land and animals that are so critical to the area. One of the key projects they are working on now is using oyster shells to create coral reefs.

Then on to the really fun part of the day…cruising the beach. NSB is one of the few places you can drive on the beach!!!! The beach was packed with people, cars and all their gear. Food trucks cruise the beach and people line up for ice cream and more!!! Some people had so much gear including grills, fans and even TV!!!!

Our last adventure of the day was supposed to be a 2 hour cruise but Mother Nature had other plans!!! A large thunderstorm hit the area and our cruise was cancelled…drat. So we sat on the deck and watched the storm then went on a beach walk and found a turtle nesting site that had been marked by the turtle patrol. Wish I could stay until they hatch and watch their march to the sea.

Tomorrow I make the long trek home. It has been an amazing 37 days exploring America from the big cities to the tiny towns.
