After breakfast we headed out to find a spot on the Mara river to hopefully witness the great migration.
The main purpose for this trip for me was to experience the Great Migration and this time of year it begins in Tanzania.
Africa’s Great Migration is the largest overland mammal migration on Earth. Over 1.5 million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebras and gazelles follow an endless, circular 1,200-mile (1,930-kilometer) route across Tanzania’s Serengeti and Kenya’s Maasai Mara. They are driven by an instinct to seek fresh grazing and water governed by local rainfall.
As we drove to the waters edge we saw lots of recent arrivals enjoying the abundant grass and resting from their journey. We got to the first spot were thousands had gathered on the other side looking for a way to cross. It was interesting to watch as one would head down then turn back as they sensed danger. As we discovered the first spot had a bunch of crocodiles in the water!!!! The scout reported back to the group and then they all started moving upriver and we followed, along with the hundred other jeeps all looking to experience the same thing. This happened two more times. As this point we had been at it for over four hours and disappoint was setting in. we were sitting back a bit as our driver was having a long chat with a fellow driver when my sister saw movement and yelled at him that it was starting to happen. We raced to the edge and for the next 30 minutes saw thousands of wildebeest and zebras make the crossing. I was overwhelmed with emotions as these incredible animals made the crossing. No words or pictures can explain how amazing this event was. As we were heading out I was in tears as we all shared the incredible event that we had just witnessed.
We drove to the next camp arriving just as the sun was setting. The staff of the hotel greeted us with traditional song and dance. After a yummy diner including the best lemon tart ever we settled into our tent and fell asleep to the sounds of the lion that was circling our camp. It was a very long day of adventuring but worth every minute of it.
I will share more pictures of the migration when I get home and have an internet that can process them. It takes about 15 minutes per picture to upload in camp and the whole system crashes after a few.
