After sunrise and a yummy breakfast at Doc’s Dinner we began our journey from Key Largo to Key West. There is only one route in and out of the Keys so we encountered lots of traffic as we traversed the 42 bridges that you must cross to get to the southern most point of the continental US.
We made a few touristy stops along the way to view the Wyland wall, the largest lobster and a fun stop at Robbie’s to feed the Tarpon, and experience a classic car parade!!!
We stopped at the National Key Deer Refuge and walked out to the Blue Hole in hopes of seeing the smallest white tail deer. Key Deer are tiny (only 24-30 inches tall) and there are only 500 remaining. We did see one peeking out of the bushes but I didn’t take a picture because I wanted to enjoy it. I added a picture from the visitor center so you could see how cute they are!!!
We arrived in Key West and settled into our home for the next four nights. The Weatherstation Inn established in 1911 was one of the first weather stations in the US. It is in an incredible neighborhood filled with home on the national registry.
After we settled in we began exploring the city which of course included an adult beverage.
The city is teaming with people who are here for a writers festival which features lots of original music that if filling the streets.
Key West is filled with history from the Little White House of Truman to the bar haunts of Sloppy Joe’s where Hemingway hung out, to the building where Pan Am got its start.
We ended up on Mallory Square for the sunset which was spectular!
So blessed to have yet another “Best Day Ever…So Far”!!
